Firms start to announce partnership promotions
22 June 2012
The new financial year has arrived and with it the annual round of new partner promotions.
Topping the charts are Freehills and Ashurst, which have promoted ten partners apiece. And it's high fives all round at Freehills in particular, where the new partner haul represents the biggest promotion round in several years - plus half the partners are women. One of the first formal duties of the new partners is expected to be to vote on the
potential merger with Herbert Smith, rumoured to be happening this month.
The firm formerly known as Blake Dawson has promoted nine new partners in Australia and one in Indonesia, with women making up four of the new partners. Meanwhile Allens, which has just entered an "
integrated global alliance" with
Linklaters, was not too far behind as it added six new partners of which two were women. The appointments are spread over the finance, litigation, funds and projects departments.

Generally the proportion of women being promoted is relatively healthy (in law firm terms at least), with women representing between 33.3% and 66% of the promotions (with the exception of Piper Alderman). Or 100% at Henry Davis York, but then they only promoted one new partner.
