East German athletes used to get pregnant on purpose because the first trimester creates lots of extra blood cells which in turn makes them better athletes

So in a way it's cheating

In case anyone is wondering, I abused a dead woman's memory by agreeing that her adage (we have more in common than divides us) was true but not in the way she intended (we're all equally rubbish).

I didn't even bring up how her husband was bundled out of save the children after being accused of sexual impropriety towards colleagues.

Graf was blown away by Monica Seles and would never have won the number of grand slams she did if Seles hadn't been stabbed. She was a superb athlete and a great player, no doubt but Seles was better.

There was a period during which Seles had the upper hand, just like there was a period where Nadal had the upper hand on Federer. There's no doubt where history stands on either.

Seles came on the scene and beat her up, then got stabbed. That's pretty much it, except that she came back and won a few more grand slams a few years later.

Could have. Would have. Should have...

Tbf I have a lot of sympathy with the view that Seles would have won more than 9 had she not been stabbed. The unfortunate part is that she was, and she didn't. I'm not sure that detracts all that much from Graf, especially the golden slam of '88.
Kaylee Frye

Except that as Mary Joe Fernandez says, Seles took the game to a new level. She was a better player m7. In 1991-1992 she won 6 out of the 8 Grand Slam titles and was in the final of Wimbledon without winning in 1992. She won the first one of 1993 and was then stabbed before the French. She was in the ascendant at that point. She was the better player.

The stats don't lie.

Or maybe the idea of someone doing something she can't and, god forbid, being praised for it was just too much for her to cope with.

The bloke who stabbed her was a bonkers Steffi Graf fan who said he wanted Steffi to be back at the top of the game. She won 8 grand slam singles titles before her 20th birthday. The grunting was annoying but she could really play.

1991 Aussie, French, US wins - didn't win Wimbledon
1992 Aussie, French US wins - finalist at Wimbledon
1993 Aussie win - stabbed at a clay courter in Germany before the French

That's seven in nine, with one of the other two reaching the final. She had taken over from Steffi by then. She came onto the scene after Steffi was established and was in the process of stealing her crown. She was world number one. It was over.

It's funny because before she was stabbed Seles was not very popular. She was the first one to really get her grunt on. A lot of people really disliked that. Then she got stabbed, took two years out, came back and won another Grand Slam and by the time she retired everyone loved her.

Suffering eh?

Lots of women players get off to a flyer when they're young (e.g. Hingis) and are untouchable for a couple of years before fallibility / boredom / discovering cock kicks in, and they wander down the rankings. There's no guarantee that Seles would have continued on that early form - she could have done a Hingis and faded away.
