Some lawyers in China have hit upon an ingenious way of developing a world class brand overnight - simply nicking another firm's name.

Norton Rose Fulbright is one of the largest global commercial firms. Readers can find out all about it at www.nortonrosefulbright.com. But its thousands of commercial lawyers may be surprised to find out that it is also a niche Chinese Intellectual Property firm, according to www.norton-rose-fulbright.com. See what they did there?

RollOnFriday's Cantonese isn't up to much, but Google translate describes the firm thus:

"Norton Rose Fulbright consists of Norton Rose Fulbright Intellectual Property Agency Ltd. and law firm Norton Rose Fulbright (chips) in two parts, is mainly engaged in intellectual property patents, trademarks, copyright , domain names, unfair competition agency services and legal affair, providing customers with comprehensive, high-quality intellectual property protection services."

Which is somewhat ironic, given that it has so blatantly ripped off another firm's IP.

It also provides advice on family law:

And is apparently staffed by Western lawyers:

Although the chap who popped onto our screen when we were navigating through the site didn't bear much of a resemblance:

No one from the real Norton Rose Fulbright would comment, presumably because they were too terrified of a massive denial of service attack from Beijing.

Excellent - what happens if the Chinese also try and clone Dentons? Presumably that would really confuse things after the China merger?

It's nice that the guy at the bottom has left his penguin's phone number - shows they at least have a heart...

Well that merely supports RoF's comment that its Cantonese isn't up to much then, doesn't it?
