A Hong Kong law firm partner, Junius Ho, has brought a defamation action against a Kennedys partner, Kevin Yam, following a very public spat.

Ho, partner of K.C. Ho & Fong, has commenced proceedings against Yam this week for writing an article about him on a  Hong Kong news website earlier this month. In the piece,Yam urges lawyers not to re-elect Ho in the upcoming Law Society council elections, giving seven reasons why he "strongly" believes that Ho "is not an appropriate candidate". Among the points listed in the diatribe, Yam accuses Ho of homophobia for allegedly saying that a victory for gay rights in court could lead to a gradual acceptance of bestiality. The Kennedys lawyer also blasts Ho for misogyny for allegedly suggesting "that a female co-panellist strip off her clothing" during a panel debate. And Yam berates Ho for having a disregard for the judiciary after he was investigated by police for taking a selfie outside a courtroom.

Ho, who has been a Law Society council member for over 22 years, penned an article in response saying that Yam "intentionally twists the facts" and the allegations are "unfounded". Ho has now filed a defamation action against Yam on the basis that he "has been gravely injured in his character and reputation".

Yam provided RollOnFriday with a statement saying that he would defend the defamation proceedings, and is "bewildered and disappointed that a public figure would see fit to sue on the expression of views over factual matters of public record".

Kennedys told RollOnFriday "we do not wish to comment on these issues, which are a matter for Mr Yam in his personal capacity".

Ho did not respond to RollOnFriday's request for a comment.
