A lawyer who had cocaine brought to his home while he attended a Law Society dinner has been jailed for tipping off his dealer about police investigations.

'Chang', who worked at a firm in Blackburn, initially acted for drug baron Neil Scarborough in a narcotics trial. However police discovered there might be more to their relationship when they followed Scarborough to Chang's home, and watched him pack three bags of cocaine in a golfing glove and hide it under Chang's bin. Phone records revealed that when Chang returned home from his Law Society dinner he made nine (presumably increasingly self-confident) calls to Scarborough. When Chang was arrested he denied using cocaine, although the drug was found on his credit cards, his wallet and in his hair.

Further probing uncovered that Chang had been attempting to illegally obtain information about police investigations into Scarborough and his gang to feed back to the criminal group. Chang was found guilty of perverting the course of justice, and has been jailed for three years.

Superintendent Lee Halstead said Chang's addiction "left him hopelessly compromised and vulnerable to the motives of leading members of organised crime groups". Chang's clients were more sympathetic, and recalled online how asking for 'Chang' after an arrest made duty sergeants "just put their head in their hands and sigh cause they know it’s a big waste of time. You ain't getting charged!"

11/03/21: At the request of Chang, due to the passage of time and out of the goodness of ROF's heart, we have replaced his name and removed the name of his firm.
