Lawyer sends extraordinary homophobic email to entire firm
29 August 2014
An attorney at US firm Becker & Poliakoff has demonstrated the progress made by the legal profession in addressing diversity issues by sending a rabidly homophobic email
to all staff in the firm.
Walter Kubitz emailed over 170 lawyers in response to an update from the firm about a recent case which decided that Florida's same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional. In his email, leaked to Above the Law
, Kubitz explains that he was moved to write "lest my usual silence be taken as assent
". He ensures that won't happen over seven frothing paragraphs in which he calls the verdict a "reckless trashing of morality
" responsible for sexually transmitted infections "with the gay plague of AIDS being a classic example

Kubitz, a senior attorney in the firm's IP practice, whose name happens to be an anagram of Likez Raw Butt, also turns to his bible. He warns that Scripture condemns homosexuality and teaches that it appeals to the "reprobate mind",
homosexuals "all the more hardened in their ways
". And it seems that nothing gets Kubitz going like a hardened homosexual. He signs off with an instruction for his co-workers, particularly those in the LGBT community: "The message to the homosexual, as to all, is 'Seek ye the LORD while he may be found'
A spokeswoman for Becker & Poliakoff told RollOnFriday that the firm regretted any harm Kubitz had caused and said that his remarks violated the firm’s email communication policy and core values. In a statement she said, "Of course, firm employees are entitled to differing opinions on religion and other subjects, however it was inappropriate for him to share such views in the workplace
She added that the firm has "communicated clearly and directly to Mr. Kubitz that his rogue, disrespectful behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Becker & Poliakoff
". She did not clarify whether that meant Kubitz would be sacked.
