A slew of firms including Clifford Chance, Herbert Smith Freehills and Ashurst have announced stonking trainee retention rates for their March 2012 intakes.

It's champagne all round (almost) at Clifford Chance, where 45 out of 48 trainees are being kept on. The 94% retention rate is the highest for the firm since at least 2010. Although, to be fair, CC was working with a much smaller intake this year: last year it kept on 54 trainees from a significantly larger 66-strong cohort. There's good news for Osborne Clarke and Olswang trainees, too, with both confirming flawless 100% scores. Osborne Clarke is retaining six out of six, and Olswang eight out of eight.

In fact, so far the picture is rosy all round. Ashurst has retained 23 out of 24 trainees (one person didn't apply), giving it an commendable 96% (last year it kept 21 out of a 27-strong intake). And Herbies improved its retention rate despite juggling a bigger cohort than last year. It's keeping 38 out of 42 trainees (90%) compared to 24 out of 32 (75%) in 2013.

The strong results mean the weakest retention rate so far is a very respectable 89%, posted by BLP. It offered 17 out of 18 trainees jobs and 16 of them accepted. Anthony Lennox, the firm's Training Principal, said it demonstrated "their commitment to the firm, and ours to them". Though fidelity seems to waver depending on the market: last spring BLP took on just 14 out of 22 NQs.
