Freshfields and Baker & McKenzie have announced solid trainee retention rates for their intakes qualifying this March, but Mayer Brown has confirmed dismal figures.

Bakers confirmed that 15 of its 17-strong cohort will join the firm as NQs. The 88% score improves on last year's 80%, when it kept on 16 out of 20 trainees. Meanwhile Freshfields is keeping on 35 of 44 trainees. In a strong year so far, the 80% retention rate is actually the lowest of the Magic Circle, though Slaughter and May has not released its figures.

However insiders leaked the news to RollOnFriday that Mayer Brown was only planning to keep on two of its five London trainees (40%). A spokeswoman confirmed the medicore stat, but said one of the unplaced trainees was being given a six month fixed-term contract.
