A barrister who bought a hotel has hit the headlines for drunkenly swearing in front of her guests.

'Michael W of Torquay' wrote on TripAdvisor that his romantic Valentine's Day dinner at the Bay Hotel in Teignmouth was ruined thanks to the owner, barrister Shirley Bothroyd of Littleton Chambers. He describes a "very drunk lady" who "staggered over and tried to communicate to us that the lighting was too dark". In his one star review he said the "clearly intoxicated" woman tried to turn on a lamp and almost fell into his wife's lap, "in the process knocking a picture off the wall". According to Disgusted of Torquay, she spent the meal dropping things on the floor and shouting, before barging into the kitchen and using "very industrial language".

Bothroyd, who says she is nicknamed the “rottweiler with lip gloss” in court, still works at Littleton Chambers. She bought the hotel for something to do in her retirement, and told The Daily Mail she was happy to be compared to Basil Fawlty. "I take it as a compliment", she said. "He had a great sense of humour, just like me" she added, missing the point of everything, "and it seemed a fun place to stay".

Ms Bothroyd practising at the Bar yesterday. Ho ho.

Bothroyd conceded that the review was 50% accurate, admitting "I do like a drink and keeping my guests entertained". She estimated that the events had cost her £2,000 in cancelled bookings, although her hotel is still ranked #2 in the Teignmouth area.*

Her name is Bothroyd not Boothroyd and she is now a former member of Littleton Chambers
