The firm formerly known as Hammonds announced its partner promotions this week: only seven associates were made up, and only two of those were in the UK despite the firm having 138 partners in the country.

Squire Sanders acquired Hammonds back in 2011 and it has been a rough ride ever since. In 2012 the firm made up a dozen partners globally, but last year this fell to eight and this year it's just seven. Two join the letterhead from the UK, with one each from Birmingham and Leeds. And despite London being the firm's largest global office, not one London associate is being made up to partner. Although at least the unsuccessful candidates didn't have to wait for two years to hear the bad news...

  Or not, actually.

Overall, that's just seven global promotions at a firm with 1,300 lawyers on its payroll. OK, the firm has been busy over the last year picking up lateral hires from the likes of BLP and DLA Piper. But that will be of little comfort to Squires' home grown lawyers who have seen years of hard graft leading to nothing.

A spokeswoman for the firm wouldn't comment.
