Morgan Cole and Blake Lapthorn have confirmed that they will merge - and redundancies are already in the offing.

The firms were originally going to have a cheeky three-way with Boyes Turner, which would have created a 450-lawyer national firm. But Boyes Turner pulled out, and two weeks ago Morgan Cole and Blake Lapthorn confirmed that they'd be merging in July. Blake Morgan (the new law firm, rather than the American singer) will still be a pretty chunky outfit, with turnover of £72m and 120 partners.

And, inevitably, rather fewer support staff than the firms currently employ. 14 are to be made redundant at Morgan Cole's Swansea office, The Lawyer reports. The firm said that this was unconnected with the merger, and entirely down to selling its insurance teams to DAC Beachcroft and Berrymans Lace Mawer last year. So expect another round or two a few weeks down the line, if the job losses following other recent mergers are anything to go by.

In a statement on Morgan Cole's website, BL Managing Partner Walter Cha says "our combination with Morgan Cole positions us as a major player in Wales and the Southern England [sic] and will provide us with a strong platform to invest in London and the Thames Valley." Presumably some of that investment will be in proof reading.
