Clifford Chance has dropped the University of Law as its training provider.

The University of Law has taught CC students the GDL and LPC for eight years. But this week RollOnFriday discovered the firm has dumped it for arch-rival BPP. Clifford Chance's future trainees will study the GDL at BPP from January 2015 and the LPC, which will incorporate a business-focussed MA, from next September.

Clifford Chance sent UoL around 100 students a year and the firm's new three year contract with BPP is worth millions. Its departure is the latest high-profile defection from UoL: in August BPP took DWF off its hands and last September the breaded cat tempted away Allen & Overy. Linklaters is now the only Magic Circle firm still there. But who knows, maybe they'll all be back in three years' time.

On the plus side, less marking

CC London Managing Partner David Bickerton wrote the Dear John letter, saying the firm has had "a longstanding and successful relationship" with the University of Law and was "grateful for the excellent work they have done with our trainees over recent years". But they've grown apart, if they're honest, and besides there's somebody else, it just happened.

In a statement the UoL said, "We wish Clifford Chance every success and look forward to working with them again in the future". Private equity company Montagu, which bought the then-College of Law for £200 million, might be a bit worried about its investment if it wasn't so busy flogging off the family silver.
