CMS Cameron McKenna is getting rid of landlines in its London office.

Next year the firm's City staff are moving to new premises on Cannon Street, where they will use a mobile phone and a headset to connect to a Microsoft product called Lync, freeing themselves from the tyranny of wires.

The firm says it hasn't decided whether it is going to make lawyers use matching Microsoft Windows phones, although since Lync is compatible with Apple, staff are probably crossing their fingers for a trendy-but-possibly-too-bendy iPhone 6. And, since the firm is "migrating our numbers into the cloud", for nothing too revealing to leak back out of it.

He realised CMS hasn't given him the latest model after all

Bulky telephones presumably wouldn't have fitted in the new office anyway. It is 30% smaller than CMS' current Mitre House premises and all the Dundas and Wilson staff have to squeeze in too. Though CMS claims it can hold 10% more staff, so staff should probably prepare for tiny furniture and PAs roped to the side of the building as well as roving the halls looking for a signal.

In a mobile world, many only see landlines in the office and wee-soaked callboxes, so expect other firms to cut the cord soon. Except hi-tech DWF, which has already moved on from physical post (though not sheds) and will presumably go straight to communicator badges.

Lync has been around and in use for years and the main selling point is that you massively slash your international/roaming phone bills

also, you can shove it on pretty much any phone, so not much chance of getting a new phone when the object is cost cutting

on the downside it is an arse to use for any kind of conference call and you have to dial everything as a bluddy international number

This isn't really news, all large firms are doing this. DLA are moving to Lync as well shortly.
