David Stewart, who stepped down as Olswang's CEO two weeks ago, has left the firm but no one seems to know why, or where he has gone.

Olswang was - surprisingly, for a media firm - sphinx-like in its silence when Stewart suddenly resigned after seven years in the top job. No explanation was given and an unlikely choice for an interim CEO was hastily made. Now Stewart has departed and when RollOnFriday asked why he had gone and where he was going, a spokeswoman would only say that "we can confirm that David Stewart has left the firm".

Rumours are inevitably rife. The firm has been seen as an unhappy ship over the last few years as partners have been divided as to whether to go global or stay a TMT boutique, grad rec has been slashed and profits have fallen. So it may be that Stewart had just had enough of the fighting. But equally, given the fall in profits, there may be blood on the carpet. Whatever the reason, the secrecy surrounding his departure is extraordinary. If he's off to a competitor why not just say so? It's not as if he's been kept in the basement as the partnership gimp or rendited to Dentons in an orange jumpsuit for waterboarding. Or has he? Place your bets below.

  A basement gimp*, yesterday

*Gimp picture created by RollOnFriday Photoshop trainee and does not depict a real gimp. All characters appearing in this work are fictitious and any resemblance to any real person, living or dead or David Stewart, is purely coincidental. David Stewart is not, to the best of RollOnFriday's knowledge, a gimp although to be fair RollOnFriday's experience in this field is limited. Actually there was that time in Covent Garden which, come to think of it, is quite near Olswang's office but that wasn't really a gimp as such, more a sort of leather bondage dwarf. Actually it might have been a motorcycle courier. Anyway whatever.

Anonymous user 31/10 obviously knows something! Then again, so do many. Interesting to see how many dare post now he's not in power.
