Ten law firms have been named in this year’s Stonewall top 100 gay-friendly employers in the UK - the same number of firms that was listed in 2014.

Baker & McKenzie ranked highest, at 6th place, compared to its 19th place ranking last year. Meanwhile Freshfields and Pinsent Masons were level pegging at 9th place, up from 66th and 45th place respectively in 2014. Herbert Smith Freehills came in 22nd place, with the other firms being CMS Cameron McKenna (40th), Hogan Lovells (48th), Eversheds (67th), new entrant Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton (72nd), Norton Rose Fulbright (75th) and K&L Gates (88th).

Last year’s highest placed law firm, Simmons & Simmons, which has consistently taken the top spot amongst law firms, was named a ‘star performer’. Due to the work it’s currently doing with Stonewall it could not be placed in the top 100.

Out of 400 organisations which applied, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust was named as the most gay-friendly, followed by Tower Hamlets Homes in second place and Lloyds Banking Group in third. MI5 made its debut into the top ten, in 7th place, showing that it’s come a long way since its ban on gay people lifted in the early 90s. Director General of MI5 suggested that gay people may possess the qualities of a good agent, as he told The Independent, “Unfortunately… many gay people have experience of hiding their true personality and not talking about it, which might fit some of MI5’s requirements”.

Baker & McKenzie global head of LGBT and diversity, Harry Small said, “We’re very proud… It’s all about people being themselves and having space to be themselves. People who can be who they are are happier”.
