DAC Beachcroft's trip to a velodrome has won RollOnFriday's esteemed Top Perk Award 2014.

Far from dreading a day out with their external advisors, dozens of in-house lawyers responded to RollOnFriday's in-house survey with fond memories of jollys in 2014. RollOnFriday combed through all the nominations using a sophisticated set of criteria (Enjoyment, Inclusivity, Originality and Is That The Time, Just Pick One), and DAC Beachcroft has emerged victorious.

The nominating in-house lawyer called DACB's  trip to Herne Hill velodrome "fun, mixed and competitive". As well as being novel and equally embarrassing and hazardous whatever one's gender, DACB showed guts with its choice. Not every firm would invite clients to dress up like Chris Hoy in a funhouse mirror and chase their lycra-clad buttocks round a track.

"I don't care if you're winning, get down there and cross-sell"

Elsewhere, tickets to headline sporting events were predictably popular. But even watching a big game on telly was enough for one in-house lawyer, who admitted that his best perk was seeing England limp out of the World Cup in Squire Patton Boggs' office. Though the firm had a secret weapon to curry favour and retain business: "Commentary by Lee Sharpe".

Less macho special time also won plaudits, from Addleshaw Goddard's chocolate-making course to Mills & Reeve's seats at the British Fashion Awards. Clifford Chance delighted one in-house lawyer with the particularly exotic gift of "access to the firm's junk", though it turned out to be a boat in Hong Kong.

Those were the good perks, just to be clear. Tune in next week for the worst of the year.

A firm in Nottingham embarrassed itself some years ago by putting on pole dancing classes for women solicitors and women clients. Oh my goodness people went along with it as well and claimed to enjoy it.
