A law student has become a University Challenge legend after dominating this year's final, though he admitted to RollOnFriday that he was soundly beaten in a pub quiz the following week.

Ted Loveday, a 21-year-old law student at Gonville and Caius College, correctly answered 10 starters for 10 in the final against Magdalen College, steering his team to victory with 255 points to Magdalen's 105. Coupled with his stunning knitwear, Loveday's intellectual prowess made him an overnight sensation.

A winner's wardrobe: Loveday love jumpers

Loveday's most impressive moment came when Jeremy Paxman asked what Greek term described an expression used only once in a text. In under three seconds Loveday buzzed in, "Hapax legomenon", causing brains across the nation to shrink in emasculated shame.

In an exclusive interview with RollOnFriday, Loveday said he had been "surprised" at the focus on his jumper and that, rather sadly, the only celebrity love the winners had received was a tweet from Richard Osman of Pointless. He also revealed that the team had subsequently taken part in a pub quiz, but finished up in 5th place out of seven. "It definitely took us down a few pegs", he said.

He seems very good and he's modest too which is particularly nice.
" Mr Loveday is the son of a journalist and a lawyer and the grandson of a former editor of The Sun, Bernard Shrimsley. He grew up in west London and went to Latymer Upper School.

Marcel Lewis, its head of classics, told The Times: “He was one of the best classicists. He got full marks in all four A-level Latin modules. The best thing about him was his modesty and willingness to help and support others.”

Jonathan White, the head of history, said: “His recall was always 100 per cent but he had a brilliant intellect, rather than just being a fact-grinder.” "
