RollOnFriday has learned that a prisoner has died in custody at Thames Magistrates' Court.

The man, aged 50, was pronounced dead in the cells at Thames Magistrates' Court shortly after midday on Saturday. A spokesman for Serco said the as-yet-unidentified 50 year old man was "taken ill" after being arrested and charged by Newham Borough officers for alleged threats to kill and threats to cause criminal damage. He was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency services attended. The death is being treated as unexplained pending a post mortem examination.  Police are not releasing his identity while next of kin are being informed.

It is not yet clear who was responsible for the prisoner. Whilst Serco is contracted to transport prisoners to a number of courts in London, including Thames, a police spokesman told RollOnFriday that Directorate of Professional Standards officers are investigating the extent of police involvement. He stressed that no officers have been suspended or placed on restricted duties. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has also been informed.

People die in custody all the time, I'm not sure why this has gained attention rather than every death?
