Three US law firms have unveiled some of the best trainee retention rates of the year.

Shearman & Sterling and Weil have both announced 100% retention rates, while Latham & Watkins has posted 95%. All nine of Weil's trainees and all 13 of RollOnFriday's Firm of the Year 2015 accepted places. Meanwhile Latham, which has more than doubled the size of its intake since 2008, is keeping 20 of its 21 trainees.

The figures represent the firms' results for the whole year as  Latham and Shearman have only one graduate intake per year and Weil has announced the retention figures for both its intakes at once. A single trainee qualified in March at what must have been an awesome party, while eight will qualify in September.

As strong as the results are, it's been a particularly good year for trainees qualifying at firms with much larger intakes, too. A glance at the table shows solid retention rates across the Magic Circle and Herbert Smith Freehills, all of whom had in excess of 40 Spring qualifiers.

Training principals at all three US firms said they were "delighted" with their results. Shearman because all its trainees got their first choice practice areas, Weil because eight of its nine did and Latham, shucks, Latham was just delighted to "welcome so many of this year’s trainee class to the firm".
