In an unusual development, the German Bar Association has been revealed as the source of a video of a jilted husband sawing a car in half that fooled the world.

In the clip, which has been viewed over 6 million times, 'Martin G' responds to breaking-up with his wife by using power tools to slice through their belongings, including an iPhone, a chair, an iron bedstead, a flatscreen telly and a car. Uploaded onto Youtube with the description "Thank you for 12 'beautiful' years, Laura! You've really earned half", the video ends with Martin listing his 50% on ebay.

News outlets from Russia Today to Iran's Press TV reported on Martin's flip-out. But hours after Fox News reported on the "hilarious" video, a group stepped forward and claimed it was a marketing stunt. And strangely the prankster was not a cereal bar of tattooed viral tweeters, but the German Bar Association.

The associaton sounded as surprised as anyone. "This story is not real. We made it up", it confessed in its racy magazine, Deutsche Anwaltauskunft. It said the idea was to highlight the problem of couples who fail to plan for possible separation. A spokesman said that he was very pleased with the response to the campaign, and that the items featured in the video were being auctioned on ebay for charity. And so, inexplicably, €73 has now been offered for half an REM record.

RollOnFriday asked the UK Bar Counsel if it was planning anything similar, but it was too busy placing hidden cameras in people's bathrooms to respond.

I suspect you might be waiting a long time for a response from the "UK Bar Counsel" (sic)
