Mere seconds after the final Spring trainee retention rates rolled in, a brace of firms including Slaughter and May, White & Case and Jones Day have unveiled encouraging Autumn results.

Following a sturdy 88% in the Spring, Slaughter and May has posted an 89% September retention rate. The Magic Circle firm offered NQ positions to 35 of its 37 trainees after two decided to withdraw from the process. 33 have accepted places.

However a bevy of US firms have managed to retain 100% of their talent. White & Case is keeping all 14 of its September qualfiers (matching its 100% March retention rate), as is Jones Day. Partner in charge of trainee recruitment and development David Smith said the firm hoped that "one day these newly qualified lawyers will make partner".

Meanwhile, Sullivan & Cromwell is keeping the four trainees who comprised its first ever London intake. Unusually, the Virgin Cohort will join a 'general practice group' working M&A, capital markets, project finance, leveraged finance, restructuring and if the walls need replastering they'll probably turn their hand to that, too. Sullivan & Cromwell says that following the scheme's success, in 2017 it will take on six trainees.

And while it didn't reach 100%, Taylor Wessing produced a strong result, too. Of 23 trainees, 20 have taken jobs at the firm. It means the Autumn table looks very healthy, so far:

"a brace of firms including Slaughter and May, White & Case and Jones Day"

With maths like that I take it RoF didn't calculate the percentages itself.
