Both the Chief Executive and Chief Financial Officer have left the University of Law following its surprise purchase by a 36-year-old entrepreneur. So has Dechert, which has taken its business to BPP.

A spokesman for new owner Aaron Etingen's company, Global University Systems, said that CEO John Latham and CFO Tom Boucher were leaving "by mutual consent". Latham served on the Executive Team for just two years, adding the role of President last February when Nigel Savage stepped down. Two of the remaining five members of the Executive Team will cover CEO duties, while finance director Gaye Culmer will fill in for Boucher. ULaw has appointed Lord Grabiner QC, former head of chambers of One Essex Court and one-time treasurer of Lincoln's Inn, as its new president, though GUS's spokesman said that Latham will continue to advise new ULaw chairman David Blunkett (yes, David Blunkett) on regulatory matters.

"None of you lot stays for longer than two years, why should I?"

Laying waste to the Executive Team doesn't chime with GUS and ULaw's insistence at the time of the sale that the agreement between the two entities would "ensure that the governance systems and management team that have helped drive ULaw’s success are retained". Then again, 'driving success' meant losing law firms hand over fist to rival BPP, including Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Baker & McKenzie, Osborne Clarke, DAC Beachcroft and DWF.

RollOnFriday can reveal that ULaw has also lost Dechert. From September the firm's GDL and LPC students will study at BPP. There is good news, however. Shearman & Sterling is transferring its 15 or so student places to ULaw from Kaplan. And, as ULaw's website states, it still enjoys exclusive training relationships with leading law firms, "including Linklaters, Ashursts [sic] and Trowers and Hamlins [sic]".

In a statement ULaw told RollOnFriday, "We have enjoyed an excellent and longstanding relationship with Decherts [sic] and look forward to the opportunity to work with them again in the future".

Great Scott, which ULaw chimp wrote those statements? How on earth can you muddle Dechert for 'Decherts'? No wonder the place is going down the toilet.

I recently completed their two year LLB programme and I have to say, they have some excellent teaching staff. However, those in charge of management and strategy have made a mockery of what could have been a great and unique legal education establishment. I feel for all of the young people duped into thinking that it was a reputable establishment. Those at the helm over the last few years should be ashamed.
