A City lawyer has apologised for a "hot-headed moment" after calling Liverpudlians "scouse scum", although it has since emerged that he has previously called the city "inbred" and claimed that its residents speak with the "accent of the dole queue".

Clive O'Connell, a partner in the London office of US firm Goldberg Segalla who is described on its website as "one of the world’s leading insurance and reinsurance legal professionals", was interviewed by a Youtube football channel following his team's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. In the interview the keen Chelsea fan rants, "Why do you think it is [that] the scouse scum were singing, 'You're getting sacked in the morning,' ...Because they know, even those scum scouse idiots, those nasty, horrible people, know that Mourinho is the best manager in the world and that he should stay here".

The interview, in which O'Connell also alleges that the FA "is led by a corrupt man", has clocked up over 355,000 views and more than a thousand comments on Facebook, including an invitation to "sod off you sad pathetic marble mouth briefcase wanker" and accusations that he is a "posh Chelsea c***", and a "Ronnie Pickering wanabee". Others however have supported him.

O'Connell told RollOnFriday that his rant, "was a hot headed and regrettable moment in which I allowed myself to be overtaken by emotion. I am much chastened". Presumably O'Connell was also feeling hot-headed when he sent the following tweet:

And again in May, when he wrote on his blog (which has subsequently been deleted) that Liverpool "is, as a city, today, inbred", and that the Scouse accent has "not gently merged into the more refined accents of the surrounding areas", but is instead, "a more pronounced accent of the dole queue".

Asked about his additional remarks after a week in which he has been raked through the coals by papers including the Liverpool Echo, O'Connell told RollOnFriday, "I am truly sorry for this entire incident. I have offended many people, friends, colleagues as well as those I have never met.  I have nothing against the city of Liverpool or its people. It is a city with an heroic history and rich culture. In particular I have nothing against supporters of Liverpool FC, who are passionate football supporters. I am not going to attempt to explain or excuse my actions. Any explanation or excuse would be insufficient. The fact is that I have shown poor judgment here and I apologise from the bottom of my heart to everyone I have offended. I was wrong".

In a statement given to RollOnFriday, Goldberg Segalla said that it was "very surprised" to learn of O'Connell's interview, since "we have always known Clive to be a caring colleague and consummate gentleman". It also defended its man, saying that it recognised, "the passion that football supporters have for their respective clubs, especially matches involving longtime rivals". Adding that its culture was "one of inclusion and mutual respect", it said that the firm also employed several Liverpool fans.

Another sad example of PC gone crazy, and a man in trouble for telling the truth. When will it end?

I feel sorry for Clive - he is a good guy who obviously got carried away. I'm just thankful no one films every stupid thing I say.

Roll On Friday 06 November 15 09:53

agreed, he's a nice guy, always very passionate about Chelsea even when they were crap. Always did have a tendency to get carried away. This shouldn't be a hanging offence.

Although it shows really bad judgment etc etc, I can't help but chuckle when someone is really very angry and still comes out with phrases such as "those nasty, horrible people". This guy clearly got worked-up, lost his temper and forgot himself.

I would like to say this is a comment that wouldn't have been picked up 10 yrs ago but now with social media etc. etc. but he was saying it to man with a microphone and camera... duh!

Glad to see how he handled it. "Hands up, I was a ****". Will be interested to see how the issue progresses - do we as a society try and burn him in public, or acknowledge people make mistakes and allow him move on after an apology. I hope it's the latter.

Clive is a very, very decent man and anyone who's worked with him knows him to be kind and caring.

Anonymous 06 November 15 12:16

I feel sorry for Clive, such a nice good guy ?! Where do all these Liberals come from ? When I was a lad it was a hanging offence !

Anonymous 06 November 15 12:40

God I dread to think what I might say after a Chelsea/Liverpool game about Chelsea if Liverpool had lost, especially when I've been on the ale.

But I would even then have enough about me to make sure I wasn't filmed and recorded saying it, that's the really stupid thing he's done here.

What is wrong with football fans? Take a good look at how rugby fans conducted themselves during the latest world cup. You'd never hear this vitriol.

I don't feel sorry for him at all. Firstly, while his rant on film in the heat of the moment is perhaps excusable, in the sense of letting off steam, he also made disrespectful and frankly unjustifiable comments about Merseyside on a blog, which suggests to me that his antipathy to Merseyside runs deep and is not a one-off. No wonder the blog was deleted. Secondly, his attitude to Mersyside is typical of a large swathe of ill-informed arrogant people who know little and care less about the area, rooted in historical perceptions which no longer have any validity, "Crawl back to your horrible Merseyside home" indeed! Pathetic, arrogant, lacking in judgement and startling in a supposedly caring individual. Thirdly, having lived in London and Mersyside, and having seen the accomodation members of my family have had in London over the years, as opposed to very pleasant homes on Merseyside, Mr O'Connell is clearly operating in an information vacuum. London has plenty of horrible homes to crawl back to and can compete with Merseyside any time in that respect. Finally, it's a game of football, and hardly worth getting that worked up about. Mr O'Connell needs to get out more, take some anger management classes and get some perspective as well as be better informed.

So most of think it's fine for a lawyer to make comments in public about "scum"? You feel sorry for him? I'm just amazed he's reached this stage of life without realising the need to either a) sharpen up your lazy categorising of entire groups of people or b) reign yourself in.
What a sorry excuse.

On the video he says scouse scum as if he thinks he's really really funny. Doesn't sound drunk at all. Is enjoying being deliberately provocative because he obviously have very poor judgment.

I have never called anyone scum in my life. Why does he think that's acceptable?

Anonymous 07 November 15 12:10

This guy is clearly out of touch. A fatal combination of recklessly playing up for the camera with a complete lack of respect for the power and reach of social media. No supposedly highly intelligent legal professional with regional racist tendencies should be allowing himself to be caught anywhere near a camera spouting such rhetoric. Fair play to him for the apology though, he's right, there's no excuse for it.

Anonymous 07 November 15 18:08

He's right tho isn't he?

Virtually all the trouble makers in politics and the unions seem to hale from Liverpool

Anonymous 10 November 15 10:11

18.08 - I think you mean "hail". Hale means "hearty" and you will no doubt be horrified to learn that it comes from the north.

He's been sacked! Check out youtube - the managing partner for GS has put out a rather good vid explainig the reasons why. Good on them.

Anonymous 13 November 15 07:00

Mourinho has clearly passed on his deluded "everyone is against us" attitude to his fans. Blinkered
