Dentons' chairman has bragged that his firm has done more for its clients this year than any other firm ever in the history of the world.

Joe Andrew made the bold claim as he announced that Dentons was approaching a tie-up with firms in Singapore and Australia. "By any objective standard, Dentons has accomplished more for our clients in one year than any other firm in recent history," said Andrew, "and the year is not over yet." Pressed as to whether this meant that he had slashed clients' fees, introduced revolutionary medicines or simply handed out branded marital aids, a spokesman clarified that Andrew was in fact referring to Dentons bringing clients "more experience in key markets around the world" through its many mergers.

This year Dentons has merged with US firm McKenna Long & Aldridge and combined with Chinese firm Dacheng (although it is referred to by Dentons at all times as , as the firm will be called in China once the combination is ratified). Partners are now set to vote on whether to combine with Singapore firm Rodyk & Davidson and with Australian firm Gadens. Both would be joined using a Swiss verein structure, under which legal work and branding is shared but profit pools remain separate. If the deals go ahead, Dentons will comprise over 7,000 lawyers operating from more than 125 locations. To put that into perspective, Baker & McKenzie, its nearest rival for headcount, has approximately 4,200 lawyers.

Dentons' spokesman said that "If approved, the deal would secure the position of the world’s largest law firm as the dominant global firm on the Pacific Rim” and all shall kneel before it.

Just thing of the Titanic heading full steam towards an iceberg marked "conflicts" and you've got a pretty good idea why the 1st class passengers are standing by the lifeboats.

7,000 is not so many when you consider that big 4 accounting firms each have over 150,000 employees. Law firms have been slow to consolidate, tied down by tradition, but this may be step towards change.

It's still an indifferent firm. The only good thing is that their mergers have put the grubby DLA in the shade as firm famous for size not quality.
