The lawyer who called Liverpudlians "scouse scum" has been sacked, on Youtube, by his Managing Partner.

Clive O'Connell, a partner at US firm Goldberg Segalla, had been filmed ranting about "scouse scum" after Liverpool beat Chelsea 3-1. After being identified on social media, O'Connell told RollOnFriday that his comments were made in "a hot-headed and regrettable moment".

Initially, Goldberg Segalla stood by its partner. Although the firm declared itself "very surprised" at his outburst, it insisted that it recognised, "the passion that football supporters have for their respective clubs". However, after a week of terrible press in which it emerged that O'Connell also tweeted that Liverpool fans should "crawl back" to their "horrible Merseyside home", and wrote that the city was "inbred" and its accent "of the dole queue", it changed its mind.

Using the same medium that exposed O'Connell, Goldberg Segalla Managing Partner Rick Cohen took to Youtube to announce that the firm was terminating its partnership with the lawyer with immediate effect. In one of the most public sackings of all time (over 83,000 views), Cohen explained that O'Connell's comments were "offensive, plain and simple", and "entirely inconsistent" with the firm's ethos.

"His conduct doesn't rise to the standards to which we hold oursleves", said Cohen, "and for these reasons we have terminated our partnership with Mr O'Connell, effective immediately". The firm then tweeted his video to Merseyside paper the Liverpool Echo, so at least Cohen might be allowed into the city.

As a scouser and a Liverpool fan, I can honestly say I wasn't in the least bit offended by what Clive said.
His rant after the game was fuelled purely by the fact that his team had lost another game to a team he obviously despises.
The blogs that have been attributed to him seem to indicate that he has an unhealthy interest and loathing for all things Liverpool-related and he made some fairly inflammatory comments, but they were nothing more than the usual boring clichés: accent; benefits culture; social housing etc. The Jimmy Saville point was a new one however!
I was surprised when his firm 'sacked' him but there was so much negative publicity around the whole thing I'm not sure he gave them much choice. I'm more surprised someone in Clive's position would be so foolish as to put such negative feelings and comments in the public domain.

The script is above the camera, which is why he keeps looking up.

Seriously, the rant is no worse than the Clifford Chance trainee though (and he didn't lose his job):

He was sacked for his "Chelsea driver on the wing" blogs, that number about 10 different rants about Liverpool, and the people of it. They are cached on google. The content is lamentable and it is highly offensive.

It put him in breach of any firms ode on diversity and equality.

Silly man.

Well as Piper has always said - one door closes and another one opens. Clive O'Connell may have been run out of Liverpool, but could now walk into a CEO level position at ANY leading Manchester firm...
