The husband of a newly-promoted partner at US firm Dorsey & Whitney died last week after crashing his plane into the firm's office.

42-year-old Doug Demarest, who flew for the Alaskan Civil Air Patrol, took off in a search and rescue Cessna without permission on 29th December. Shortly before 7am he clipped his wing on Dorsey's Anchorage office, sending the plane crashing into another building. His wife, Kate, wasn't in the building at the time. Demarest died at the scene.

A spokesman for the firm said that "based on the very limited facts we have, we believe it was a personal tragedy". There is currently no indication that Demarest intended to harm anyone but himself. The FBI is investigating and has yet to comment.

Kate Demarest has two small children. A group of wrongly-imprisoned men whom she worked pro bono to help release organised an emergency fundraiser for her on Monday.
