Macfarlanes and Osborne Clarke have unveiled trainee retention rates of 100%. And so has US firm Mayer Brown, ending years of weak results.

Osborne Clarke had the biggest Spring intake of the three firms, and is retaining all seven of its newly-qualified solicitors. It marks an improvement on recent retention results for the Bristol-based firm, which performed very well in the RollOnFriday Firm of the Year 2016 survey. Last year it retained 89% of a larger Spring cohort (eight out of nine NQs), and 67% (six out of nine) of its Autumn qualifiers.

Managing Partner Ray Berg said, "Congratulations to all of our spring qualifiers. It's fantastic to see such talent joining the ranks, and I'm really proud that all of our trainees will be staying here at Osborne Clarke".

Macfarlanes has retained all six of its Spring NQs. Head of graduate recruitment, partner Seán Lavin, said, "We recruit and train each generation of our trainees in the hope and expectation that all of them will qualify with the firm and have long careers here.  As such we are of course very pleased to have achieved 100% retention this March".

Having failed to achieve an annual trainee retention rate of more than 65% since 2009, Mayer Brown is off to an unusually good start this year. The firm halved its trainee intake in 2014 but still failed to find jobs for many of its NQs. This Spring, however, it is retaining all four members of its diminutive cohort.
