Gowling WLG has turned its back on standard quotes from the legal directories, and decided on the much more efficient and predictable strategy of marketing its partners using quotes written by themselves about themselves. If other firms follow suit, this could spell big trouble for Chambers and the Legal 500.

However, by ignoring the legal directories, the "career & recognition" paths for some of the partners have been left tragically blank:

Note to the marketing team: strike out the word "Recognition"

1998 to 2016 - the barren years. Not even an office quiz victory

However Andrew Dobson, the Head of Gowling's Singapore office, has gone against the grain by sticking his neck out and opting for a quote from an outside source. Although it happens to be the Sunday People. From 1998:

(c) The Sunday People (a UK Sunday newspaper), 1998

And for the benefit of Gowlings' Singaporean clients, here's a recent example of the Sunday People's incisive legal analysis:

RollOnFriday contacted Dobson about his profile, and he said "It's certainly an old quote but it's one I like, particularly because it's not your normal directory one which all get a bit samey. It came out of the work on behalf of the Estate of Diana, Princess of Wales and again I am proud of the body of work done for the trustees. I would mention in passing that that brush with the tabloids did make me lose a bit of faith in the legal press which did not hesitate to provide the red tops with my photo when I thought they may be on our side. I suppose not many lawyers get quoted in the Sunday People although I suspect my mother may have been the only reader."

Well batted Dobson, and you can quote RollOnFriday on that.
