5 Essex Court has apologised after it asked 30 students to interview for pupillage. And them promptly disinvited them all.

The set emailed the candidates to say that they were being invited to interview for one of two pupillages, each of which had guaranteed earnings of £40,000 p.a.. Hurrah!

And then it emailed them to say not really. It was a clerical error and they should never have been contacted in the first place. Boo.

Just to rub salt into the wound, Legal Cheek reports that the set then sent the unfortunate candidates yet another email pointing out that they yes, they really weren't being called to interview.

A spokesman for 5 Essex Court told RollOnFriday that "all pupillage applicants who were not selected for first interview were moved to the “unsuccessful” category on the pupillage gateway at about 7pm on 13th June. However, at the same time some were incorrectly sent an invitation for interview. This understandably caused confusion. The mistake was noticed and corrected by 8.30pm. Chambers has apologised to the candidates who are affected and can well understand their disappointment. It was an error that should not have happened."
