Shearman & Sterling is retaining 100% of trainees qualifying this September.

The US firm is keeping on all 13 of its NQs, mirroring the 100% retention rate it managed last year when it also retained all 13 of its annual intake. Shearman has come first in the RollOnFriday Firm of the Year survey for the last two years (joint with Burges Salmon in 2016). Trainees in the latest survey praised the "excellent emphasis on training sessions", and "responsiveness to trainee demands (ie. adding two new seat abroad this year)". And the fact that "the money is great".

This June the firm unveiled hefty pay rises for its London lawyers. In a bid to keep ahead of the Magic Circle, it raised NQ pay from £85,000 (including bonus) to £95,000. So it's perhaps not surprising that even though "the hours can be pretty hellish", all its trainees have chosen to stick around.

"What first attracted you to your NQ offer?"

John Adams, Shearman & Sterling’s Training Principal, said it was "great to see another bright group of trainees come through our ranks". And kick off the autumn trainee retention season. There were fun and games this March when RollOnFriday caught Simmons & Simmons being economical with the acualité. It somehow forgot to include four trainees who had left the firm in its results.
