An EU law professor has responded to threats and insults with an exemplary out-of-office message.

Prof Michael Dougan lectures on EU law at the University of Liverpool law school and specialises in EU constitutional law, the Single Market and EU welfare law. Earlier this month a video of a speech Dougan delivered backing Remain clocked up 6.7 million views on Facebook. It also earned Dougan a target on his back. In the 24 minute speech, Professor Dougan, who has advised government departments on EU law, accused Leave campaigners of "dishonesty, really, on an industrial scale".

Prof Dougan, throwing word tomatoes at the battle bus

Swivel-eyed loons and chest-thumping xenophobes deluged his inbox with offensive suggestions. So he set up a permanent out-of-office message, asking correspondents who “have sent me an abusive message... that I have my snout in the EU trough” not to be offended “if I do not treat replying to your message as a priority”.

Dougan, who is from Northern Ireland, told Legal Cheek that since the vote, "racist messages have starting coming in larger numbers", mostly "along the lines of 'fuck off back to paddyland you fucking IRA c**t'”. Which isn't very nice. Undeterred, he's now creating a follow-up video on the consequences of the Brexit vote.

Rather puzzled why this web site is taking a stance on a political issue like Brexit. I also find the insinuation that those who supported Brexit are "bigots" offensive.

Evenso out of curiosity I watched the video that Dougan produced. The content was thin, repetitive, self congratulatory and full of holes. It did not deserve the large number of views which it received.

@Anon 10:57, can you explain how there's an insinuation in the above that all Brexit supports are bigots? If not, back in your box.

How about this?
"The News

The entire country is now going to hell in a handcart. But at least, as the RoF discussion board points out, some snaggle-toothed, workshy, web-footed half wits get to stick two fingers up to the continent. So that's all right then."

Aww diddums poor 10.57. Are your iddle feelings hurt when people point out rightly that the campaign you supported sided with the filth of society. You can judge a person by the company they keep and yours are beneath contempt.

People sending him racist abuse presumably don't realise that Northern Ireland is, er, in the UK.
