A law firm has expressed shock after being inundated with racist taunts on social media.

Manchester firm Carter Law, which specialises in advising Muslims on divorces and family law, posted an advert on Facebook which read, “Seeking advice on Islamic Family Law, Talaq or Khula? Carter Law will ensure your family matters are dealt with in a Sharia compliant way”. Two readers soon chipped in with their own advice:

  • You need to take your ISLAMIC business and go back to the country you came from."
  • “ISLAM has NO PLACE in OUR COUNTRY we are CHRISTIANS and will remain CHRISTIANS.”
At first, the Carter Law team attempted to educate the hatemongers, reported the Manchester Evening News, replying, “Thank you for your insightful comment. We can assure that our business is neither ‘Islamic’ nor ‘Christian’, and in fact has no religious affiliation. We are happy to provide our services to clients of any creed".

A Facebook user drafting his comments, last night

Then another true patriot piped up, suggesting, “There is only one law in the UK, abide by it or GTF OUT”. Carter Law gamely responded, “The services we are offer aren’t about circumventing UK law. These legal services are fully compliant with the rule of UK law, but also with the beliefs of our Muslim clients for their peace of mind. Thank you for your valuable input, though”.

But the first rule of the internet is that no-one changes their mind (the second is 'cats'), and soon more furious Christian soldiers piled in. One trainee judge simply smashed out, "ONE LAW IN THIS COUNTRY”. Another accused the firm's staff of being "traitors".

Carter Law's Search Engine Optimisation Specialist (yes, it has one) Jack MacMichael said the firm was “extremely shocked at the racist reactions". He said commenters "seem to believe that there is some sinister parallel legal system for Muslims, but the services that we’re advertising are within the bounds of the law of England and Wales. They simply meet the needs of observant Muslim clients". MacMichael added, “We’re all entitled to an opinion, but to see such unashamedly racist comments in a public forum wasn’t a pleasant experience”.

I love it when "Christians" speak for us all, they are so wise. The thing is, with these particular "Christians" when you turn the other cheek, you get slapped twice

05/08/2016 at 09:13, who says they are all Christians? Only one comment I see mentions Christianity. I have come across a number of atheists online who say the same thing and are happy to attack any "Abrahaimic faith". Atheists and agnostics can be (and often are) racist/religious intolerant too. It is evident that this rise in Islamophobia is more race and culture centric than religion (ie the majority of Islamophobes don't dislike it because it conflicts with Christianity).

To Carter Law from a reader in Hong Kong: I applaud the way in which you have responded to the abusive backlash.

I particularly enjoyed the comment from the great legal mind who opined 'There is only one law in the UK', when the UK encompasses no less than three separate legal jurisdictions.
