Linklaters, which is one of the biggest recruiters of newly-qualified lawyers, has posted an excellent trainee retention result.

This September 56 trainees will qualify at the Magic Circle firm. Five are quitting, but 51 are being absorbed into the belly of the mighty beast. That's a 91% retention rate, up from 86% in the spring and 84% last September. Linklaters Training Principal Nick Rumsby said the firm was “again fortunate to have a large group of talented junior lawyers".

Another big hitter, Herbert Smith Freehills, also showed it is a safe berth for trainees. 31 out of 33 of its trainees applied for jobs, and all were offered and accepted positions. It mirrors the firm's spring result, and means Herbies hasn't dipped below 90% for two years. KWM, please concentrate, this is how it is meant to be done.

Three US firms also posted good results, albeit for their substantially smaller intakes. Covington & Burling snared all seven of its qualifiers, K&L Gates dropped just one and Cleary Gottlieb superpleased its intake by retaining all of them. The cash probably helped.
