A law student has been left stunned after a Trowers & Hamlins representative asked if he was gay and then referred to AIDS.

The student, whom RollOnFriday shall call Mr X, was subjected to the comments while browsing the stalls at the Birmingham University law fair in November. He told RollOnFriday, "I spoke to all the different firms", but only "one stood out". Unfortunately it was "for all the wrong reasons".

After becoming engaged in conversation with one of the Trowers stallholders, Mr X said she suddenly "asked if I was gay". He said, "I must have looked shocked", as "she then followed up with, 'don't be offended, it's not like I asked if you had aids or anything'. WTF!"

A Trowers staffer lets their inner voice loose

A Trowers spokeswoman said, "Everyone has AIDS! AIDS AIDS AIDS! AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS! Everyone has AIDS!"  "As a firm we are committed to recruiting and retaining the best talent whatever their sexual orientation, age, gender or ethnicity".

As someone who works at Trowers these seems like a really odd story. Whatever the failings of the firm, I have never worked at any law firm with so many gay partners (including a significant proportion of the senior equity), fee earners and support staff. This by far the most tolerant and inclusive firm I have ever come across.

I'm sure Trowers is a lovely firm and full of freethinking wonderful people. That said, it really doesn’t help anyone to undermine the experience of the gay community by dismissing their stories as 'blips' (re “as someone who works at Trowers” post) or 'lies’ (re “magical things” post ) would suggest. It’s the “I’m friends with a gay person and he doesn’t experience prejudice” type thinking often proffered by well meaning, liberal, guardian reading but none the less privileged classes that continues to subjugate and silence minority voices.

From the little I know about them they're not the kind of firm you'd expect this from.
