Burges Salmon is retaining 100% of its qualifying trainees, but Scottish firms are performing more poorly.

All 28 trainees at the firm, which takes on one intake a year, were offered and accepted places. It continues a fairly impressive run which has seen Burges Salmon clock up a 91% retention rate in 2014, 100% in 2015 and a not-quite-as-amazing 85% in 2016.

The Bristol firm also came top of the RollOnFriday Firm of the Year survey 2017, and its trainees' responses gave a hint that none of them would turn down a job. They marked Burges Salmon 91% overall, praising it for the "lovely people" and "unbelievably open and supportive culture" where "they really seem to care about the trainees". One trainee "stayed until 8pm one night and two partners I didn't know both stuck their heads around the door to make sure I was ok". Bless. Burges Salmon's 'Chief People Officer', Robert Halton, said it was "wonderful news that all of our trainees will be staying with us". A trainee said it was "nice to know I won't die early because of London pollution".

RollOnFriday recognises this is a gross misrepresentation of the wonders of Scotland, and the dangers of the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Life expectancy is of course even lower in Glasgow, and trainee job expectancy in Scotland also appears to be short. Maclay Murray & Spens is set to retain just nine out of 22 trainees, or 41%, this Spring. An optimistic spokesman said, "in the initial phase of our NQ recruitment we offered eight NQ positions and have already increased this to nine. With MMS' financial year ending on 31st May, a month later than most our peers, experience shows that the final number could well be higher still, as our business planning process continues over the coming weeks".

Rumours reached RollOnFriday that Burness Paull had also soiled its kilt on trainee retention, but a spokeswoman for the Scottish firm said that as its trainees did not qualify until August, no retention decisions had been finalised. It follows a dismal result for Shepherd & Wedderburn, revealed last week.

No surprise of another miserable performance by MMS when their only decent partners are busy jumping ship

Another year at MMS, another year of a ridiculous policy of hiring too many trainees. Why don't they just hire paralegals - they are a cheaper alternative.

You seem to forget that they are helping these trainees regardless of whether they are offered an NQ position; They are actually getting a practising certificate.
