A solicitor is being investigated by his employer after his ex-lover embarked on a media blitz when she discovered that he was married and had lied about his identity.

44-year-old Anna Rowe dated the man, who called himself 'Antony Ray', after he contacted her on Tinder in 2015. But after six months during which he visited her home in Kent two or three times a week, Rowe said, he vanished, telling Rowe that his mother had cancer and he had to look after her. Over the following weeks he made more excuses.

Rowe grew suspicious and found out, like so many before her, that Ray was still active on Tinder. When she ran Ray's Tinder profile photos through reverse image search on Google, she discovered somewhat belatedly that they were not of him, and that he'd been using pictures of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan instead. She dug further and discovered that Ray, who told her he was a businessman who worked in aviation, was actually a married in-house lawyer employed by a London airport, and that 'Antony Ray' was a fake name. Rowe confronted him about his deceit and ended the relationship.

When the police told Rowe there was nothing they could do, she went public, losing her job as a teaching assistant as a result. As well as appearing on talk shows and giving interviews to the papers, she started a petition calling on the government to outlaw "creating fake online profiles for sex". It has attracted over 40,000 signatures from people who agree that 'catfishing' should become a crime, and Rowe told RollOnFriday that so far nine women have contacted her claiming that 'Ray' fooled them, too.

The fake profile, a closer likeness, and Rowe.

Rowe also went to the SRA, which told her that as 'Ray’'s dating profile did not state that he was a solicitor his actions "cannot be said to affect the public’s trust and confidence in him as a solicitor or in the provisions of legal services". Speaking to RollOnFriday, Rowe said she told the SRA earlier this week, "If being a compulsive pathological liar who fakes a complete identity to use women doesn't call [fitness to practise] into question, what does?" She also told the regulator that 'Ray' could have opened himself up to blackmail. An SRA spokesman said, "We are reviewing Mrs Rowe's concerns in the light of the additional information provided, and will take any further evidence into account". Although God help the profession if a righteous love life becomes a requirement for entry.

'Ray' is also under investigation by his employers as a result of his ex-girlfriend's fury. A spokesman for the airport said it was "aware of allegations against a member of staff and is actively looking into the matter. We will not comment any further until enquiries have concluded". Perhaps 'Ray' should have told her he was dead.

Married man pretending to be single. That's a new one on me. Was he wearing a bag over his head when he met her? Did she not realise it was different man?

Wait... what? Did she actually meet him? If she did, then surely she would have noticed that the picture was inaccurate. If she didn't meet him, what's the problem?

I would like to commend her for the dignified way in which she has unobtrusively gone about not being an obsessive drama queen.

She should have met him almost right away and before that check him out doing a bit of due diligence etc.
If you lie and someone is hurt emotionally by that that is not a crime I suspect. If you say you have a large penis when you don't or you use a older picture again that is probably not against the law. If you say you don't have an STD and then infect someone with something nasty - that has been actionable in the past -personal injury. If you lie about your job and use a fake picture that is certainly getting pretty nasty. Sounds more like actionable misrepresentation rather than an SRA thing. If the SRA finds against this man then they will need to look into every other man (or woman) who has said they earn more than they do to get a woman into bed or women who have pretended to be slim and then 6 months later after the man's chatted to them for hours and hours and wasted loads of time realised on meeting they are actually 20 stone.

Why do you think he used this picture? He could get away with it being a good likeness although younger than his given age and plenty do that? There were no surprises when we met on the looks front. I saw his real pictures before we met. Morals and solicitors? You need to up your game... no wonder society is as bad as it is. Sad.

I find being a compulsive pathological liar is a base requirement for being a solicitor these days...

I got drawn into a relationship by someone with a fake profile: "blonde with GSOH" - turned out to be a right miserable bag with black roots. Where do I sign the petition?

I met someone on GrindR who promised 'no strings fun', but then we had fun with strings attached. Call the SRA.

I really think that everyone is missing the point of his dishonesty with this woman, it was not a one off to get into her bed this was a sustained pretense for 14 months, and if you read the press and there is lots of it he had several other women on the go with the same story, he played the i love you and marriage card not i just want sex, misrepresentation at the very least, and he works for a national airport in our capital, at the very last he opened himself up for blackmail at the very least.

'businessman who worked in aviation - not a million miles from an in - house lawyer at airport. He is not a porter. Who hasn't used a 'City lawyer' line when working in SE1?
