Addleshaw Goddard has been accused of stereotyping after it celebrated merging with a Scottish firm by serving up deep-fried Mars Bars.

On 1 June the firm completed its takeover of Scottish solicitors HBJ Gateley. To mark the acquisition, AG held a party at its Manchester office. But in a move which has divided opinion like the Sassenachs divided William Wallace, guests were offered slices of battered Mars Bar at the function.

A source told RollOnFriday that some figures in the firm were "furious" at the "insensitive" inclusion of Scotland's national dish on the menu. The association of deep-fried Mars Bars with Scotland has been criticised for contributing to a portrait of urban Scots as sour, pale, unhealthy alcoholics whose only exercise comes from grave-robbing.

"Ye'll take the High Road and RoF'll take the low road, and we'll be in Scotland afore ye."

However, sources close to the firm assured RollOnFriday that the newly-acquired Scottish lawyers took the presence of deep-fried Mars Bars in good humour. They did so without the blessing of Mars, which has said that "deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles". However RollOnFriday is happy to endorse the fatal snack. To enjoy a refreshing 'Glasgow lolly' at home, whisk together flour, water and salt, heat some vegetable oil until hot (190°C), dip a Mars Bar into the batter and then drop it into the oil. Fry until golden, drain on a paper towel and take one step closer to morbid obesity. For a tropical twist, use a Bounty.

A spokesman for Addleshaw Goddard said, "the celebrations were a great success with haggis, tatties and neeps also on the menu. All the Scots had a good laugh at it – its jellied eels and toad-in-the-hole when we have our next party in Scotland".

Pro tip: If you substitute the water for ale in the recipe, you'll achieve a more authentically dirty chip shop flavour in the resulting fried confectionery.
