In what would be major news, creditors have attempted to wind up a Magic Circle law firm. In what is less major news, the target for liquidation is not Slaughter and May, Clifford Chance, Linklaters, Allen & Overy or Freshfields but a solicitor's mysterious company.

Earlier this month a petition to wind up Magic Circle Law Firm Limited was heard in the Bankruptcy & Companies Court.
According to Companies House filings, its business is the "buying and selling of own real estate". It is the third attempt to liquidate Magic Circle Law Firm since it was founded in 2013. Compulsory strike-off notices were published in December 2015 and in September 2016, when Newham Council was the petitioner. In both instances the actions were discontinued.

Fine, fine, fine, fine, fi- hang on...

Other than brandjacking the UK's elite firms, Magic Circle Law Firm does not appear to have any connection with the actual Magic Circle. Its sole director is solicitor Akbar Ali Malik, who runs Malik Law Chambers (which is not a Magic Circle firm) from offices in Bethnal Green.

RollOnFriday asked Malik what his aims were for the company and why he kept letting a business of such tangential pedigree almost go bust. He did not respond to requests for comment.
