A trainee solicitor has avoided jail after holding himself out as a solicitor and charging immigrants for advice.

Babar Khan, from Sydenham, set up a company called Prime Legal Solicitors and charged three clients for immigration advice, despite not being qualified. Last week Judge Korner QC, sitting in Southwark Crown Court, found that Khan had taken advantage of vulnerable people and intentionally deceived them. He said “Immigration Tribunals in the UK are struggling to cope with the number of unmeritorious appeals because of illegal advisers like you. You took advantage of the desperation and vulnerability of these applicants. This is a seriously dishonest offence that crosses the custody threshold. There are no mitigating factors other than your hitherto good character.”

Khan was sentenced to 18 months jail, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £500 in costs.
