The law student who claimed he was being investigated by Edinburgh University for mocking ISIS has been exonerated, although it appears he may never have been investigated for mocking ISIS.

Robbie Travers, a future Glamorous Solicitor if ever there was one, claimed that he was under investigation for teasing the terrorist group in the wake of the US military's MOAB assault in April. Travers had posted, “Excellent news that the US administration and Trump ordered an accurate strike on an Isis network of tunnels in Afghanistan. I'm glad we could bring these barbarians a step closer to collecting their 72 virgins".

Travers told his Facebook followers that he was being investigated by Edinburgh University for his barb, writing, "Mocking ISIS allegedly made Islamic and minority students feel 'threatened' and 'unsafe,' so goes the complainant's ramblings". He said he had "engaged legal advice to dismiss this nonsense", although when RollOnFriday asked which firms he had engaged he said, "I am not publicly revealing the identities, chambers and firms of my legal team".

He should be more worried about Jason and the Argonauts.

Travers' claim went around the world and was held up as an example of 'PC gorn mad' by right-wing commentators. The 21-year-old subsequently posted that he was also being investigated over complaints that he:

  • was Islamaphobic for criticising use of the hijab "for erasing women and for praising Theresa May for not wearing one
  • was transphobic because he supported drag queens' right to perform at LGBT events
  • exhibited "expressions and behaviours of whorephobia" because he wanted sex work to be criminalised
  • lied about radicalisation amongst BME students.

A spokesman for the University rejected Travers' account, telling RollOnFriday that it "has not and would not consider bringing charges of misconduct against any student for mocking ISIS". But it confirmed that it had received allegations from students that Travers had breached its Code of Student Conduct in other respects. It said it "regrets that an internal student conduct matter is being played out in the public arena, as this risks being harmful to all the students involved as well as damaging the integrity of the investigation". Unfortunately for its sense of decorum, one of its students is an internet contrarian making a name for himself, and that requires piping up. Travers told RollOnFriday that he had proof the University was investigating him for mocking ISIS and accused it of having "dropped and adopted different positions on ISBreathtakingly stupid".

When the investigation wrapped up  this week a University spokeswoman said it would not comment on its findings as "this is not fair to any of the students involved". Travers was not so fussed, telling RollOnFiday that all the charges had been dismissed, "and I'm grateful and relieved as such".

That's princess Eugene, isn't it?

Anyway, the man is clearly a horrid, horrid 'phobe and should be shunned by polite society. Mocking the cultural beliefs of ISIS is beyond the pale. How very dare he?

The implication here is that Edinburgh University appears to associate all of its Islamic and minority students with ISIS. Which is an amazingly racist stance by for such an institution to take.
