An Irish firm has taken a refreshing approach to recruitment and asked for candidates who are "better than the partners".

The genuine vacancy for Healy O'Connor Solicitors also explains that the recruitment process needs to be completed "well in advance of the annual Christmas Party". Posted on the Irish Law Society's jobs page, it promises a role "unravelling the mystery that is conveyancing" and "hamming it up in the local District Court".

Inviting jobseekers to email a CV and cover letter, the vacancy adds, "They had a monkey once and paid it peanuts. It didn't work out so they don't do that anymore".

"I've had quite a lot to vacancies, but I'm fine to post those drink."

Asked why things did not work out with the monkey, a spokesman said "It isn’t a reference to anyone!" He said the firm was "just trying to get away from the usual 'Salary commensurate with experience'" format. RollOnFriday was going to provide a free link to the vacancy in honour of its novelty, but for some reason the firm has yanked it offline.

Fair play to them. Pretty amusing.

Aaaaaaaand cue comments about "dreadful levity", "bringing the profession into disrepute", etc.

I'm half Irish, BTW, in case anyone was wondering.

I like it.

The advert is amusing but also makes it clear what the firm is looking for.

Much better than the usual generic sales-speak you get in most job ads.

Law can be fun too.

Like the corporate partner said to me, with a twinkle in his eye, before my corporate seat as a trainee, "We'll have a lot of fun."

We didn't.
