A Mishcon de Reya partner who attended an all-male charity event at which hostesses were groped has condemned the event, as has the firm.

Real estate partner Nick Minkoff was revealed as one of the guests at the Presidents Club Charity Dinner alongside invitees who included Ivy owner Richard Caring, Barclays investment banking Vice Chairman Makram Azar, Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi, presenter Vernon Kay, "funnyman" David Walliams, Dragons Den stars Peter Jones and Theo Pahphitis, celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo, BHS bandit Sir Philip Green and a flotilla of wealthy property spivs.

Undercover reporters from the Financial Times penetrated the gala and reported witnessing guests groping, sexually harassing and propositioning female hostesses. Lots at the auction, which has raised tens of millions for charity, included a night at the Windmill strip club in Soho, and plastic surgery which was advertised with the slogan “Add spice to your wife”.

But it was the treatment of the 130 hostesses by the 300 men in attendance which has led to the closure of the Club. Hostesses were told they had to be "tall, thin and pretty", and were instructed to wear small black skirts with matching black underwear. The FT talked to hostesses who said guests repeatedly put their hands up their skirts. One said a guest exposed his penis to her at the table. Others reported being fondled, lunged at for kisses and being invited upstairs to guests' rooms. A 19-year-old hostess said a guest asked whether she was a prostitute. “I’ve never done this before, and I’m never doing it again”, she said. “It’s fucking scary”.

After Minkoff's name was exposed when the guest list was published in the Guardian, Mishcon de Reya released a statement condemning the event. "The existence of male only events of the type operated by the Presidents Club are contrary to the core values of Mishcon de Reya", it said, "specifically that we always aim to foster a culture which thrives on diversity and respect for the individual".

The "actions that took place that night were deplorable and should be condemned" and " have no legitimate place in society", continued the firm. It said that Minkoff attended the event "as a guest in order to support good causes". However, "he is embarrassed by being associated with this event and has confirmed that he never personally witnessed any of the reported behaviours", but "does not dispute them. He himself condemns any such behaviours".

Solicitors on the RollOnFriday Discussion Board said that, on the plus side, "If you're looking to get out from underneath Barry Sweatstain with a decent payoff and reputation intact surely this is your chance?" West End divorce lawyers, said another,  "should be coining it in for the next five years off the back of this".

A night out in Newcastle would make this event look pedestrian. Asking a barmaid you’ve never met for sex in Sunderland doesn’t lower the tone either.

Unless Minkoff was the person who exposed himself or he physically assaulted someone, which is not alleged, I don't think he has anything to be ashamed of. Shock horror, rich older men like sexy young women pandering to their egos and encouraging them to spend money, and some women have no problem exploiting this. Some men are egotistical, lecherous bastards who should keep their hands to themselves but the majority would never behave in such a way.

There's plenty of naughty behaviour at MIPIM of course, albeit enjoyed by a minority but nevertheless I await the media's righteous condemnation of the entire property industry for facilitating and condoning the exploitation of half the prostitutes and drug dealers in France in due course.

Anon at 09.57 - the FT did an article yesterday on MIPIM, prostitutes on yachts and all. Probably not the year to get it past your BD guys.

Pathetic. Only a sleazeball goes to an all-male gala dinner advertised as 'the most un-PC event of the year'. Only a thick sleazeball reckons it's a good idea to go to said event in 2018, given the way the wind is blowing post-Weinstein.

The notion of well refreshed red faced men wanting to goose young women, perhaps for research purposes to see if their breasts make a noise like a clown horn when squeezed, has no correlation whatsoever with my experience of the real estate sector. Real estate as we know is so reputable that there was no need for it to be regulated under FSMA, and no real estate developer is corrupt, there is no money laundering, and there is absolutely no inappropriate behaviour towards women some or all of the time. Real Estate developers also make the best Presidents, both of countries and charitable clubs. I don't know how anyone could possibly think otherwise.

This exposé is a perfect analogy for most workplaces
HR: "We're totally committed to work place equality and we've never seen anything awful happen or said anything sexist, ever" and "we saw nothing at our table so it's all ok"
Reality: women the world over have to tolerate:
- handsy colleagues, clients and agents
- "ill-judged" comments about their careers, looks or fertility which men would never dream of asking men
- being excluded from male dominated events
So its just business as usual.

Blimey...forget Mr Minkoff, imagine being trapped in a confined space with ANY of those A*****les !

Anon @ 14.12h, 26/01/2018 - I am continuously ridiculed about the size of my allegedly small member and people are astounded when they find out I'm not gay. I am also told, when meeting previous colleagues, "oh! you get so fat!".

Anonymous 29 January 18 22:41

Yes pathetic. Of course no one ever witnesses anything. In truth they know exactly what they're signing up for. The rest is just words.
