Fiona Onasanya, the Labour MP for Peterborough and a lawyer, has been charged with two counts of seeking to pervert the course of justice by lying about speeding.

Onasanya and her brother Festus are jointly accused of telling the police that someone else was driving a car ticketed for speeding on July 24th last year, when in fact the MP was behind the wheel. The charge alleges that Onasanya put the framed person at risk of prosecution and punishment, "enabling you, as a consequence, to avoid such prosecution and punishment”.

     "Yes Officer, 'twas I, Santa."

The pair are also accused of blaming someone else for another speeding offence, this time allegedly committed by Festus, on 23 August 2017.

Onasanya had only been elected as Peterborough's MP six weeks before the first alleged offence, when she unseated the Tory incumbent by 607 votes. Prior to that, she worked as a commercial property lawyer at a variety of firms in Cambridge, including Howes Percival for just six months and Eversheds for three years.

Onasanya did not respond to a request for comment, or she did but it was lost to the wind as she roared past.

Festus is a great name.
Wonder if people do the Addams Family theme tune when they say it.
I wouldn't be able to stop myself.

Why do people do this? It's a few points and fine versus the risk of 6 months in the slammer and complete loss of career.

@1454 - Although you wouldn’t know it from reading this article, she hasn’t been convicted yet.

Apart from the use of the words accused, charged, charge and alleges? Yes, it's completely opaque

I don't get it, why risk everything for £60 and 3 points? Your insurance doesn't even go up for 3 points.
