King & Wood Mallesons is to celebrate the one year anniversary of the merger with SJ Berwin by dropping SJB entirely from its brand on 1 November.

The firm has been operating as King & Wood Mallesons globally for the last year, except in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa, where it has been known by the rather lengthy name of King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin. It was always expected that the UK firm would be consumed by the Asia-Pacific powerhouse, and so from 1 November its name will reflect that.

In ten minutes it was like it was never there

The firm agreed from the outset that it would drop SJB “once we were happy that we’d successfully transitioned the brand”. At least SJ Berwin lawyers will have some fond memories to hang on to.

A spokeswoman for SJB, sorry King & Wood Mallesons, sorry, not yet, King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin, said “our clients globally have responded very positively to the new firm, and therefore we are confident that we’re ready to adopt the one firm name across all markets”. That grinding sound you hear is Stanley Berwin, down to just one major law firm, turning in his grave.

Only Berwins' would conclude that merging with a commie Chinese firm, without any mechanism for sharing or increasing partner profits, was a great idea.
