BLP has dusted off the office trumpet and announced that is is open for business in Myanmar. Again.
The firm has been operating in the country since March 2014 when it agreed to a non-exclusive tie-up with local law firm, Legal Network Consultants. A BLP press release was at pains to stress that although the firm is setting up its own shop in the country, its relationship with the local firm will not be affected, and that they "will continue to prosper and grow, competing for sharing work whenever necessary".
Chris Hughes, freshly poached from Baker & McKenzie, will lead the new office. Effortlessly slipping into job interview mode, Hughes said that BLP has a "rich history of working in the South East Asia region", and that the opportunity to build a local presence in Myanmar "really attracted me to the firm".
Myanmar is the firm's fourteenth office and its fourth in Asia (with the others in China, Hong Kong and Singapore). Bob Charlton, head of the Asia practice, said that Myanmar is in "growth mode" and "one of the most emerging of the South East Asian economies".
