Pinsent Masons joins Olswang at the bottom of the trainee retention table after announcing with a muted fanfare that it will only be retaining five trainees out of its class of ten.
The 50% rate is a sharp drop from the 79% Pinsents managed last Spring. The stat looks shabby alongside the six firms boasting 100%, while Herbies, Slaughter and May and Allen & Overy each dropped fewer trainees despite having much larger cohorts.
A spokeswoman for the firm admitted the figure was "disappointing", explaining that out of the qualifying pool of ten: seven applied for NQ roles, six offers were made and five accepted. However, one of those not being taken on will maintain ties with the firm as they are joining Pinsent's flexible resourcing service, Vario. Pinsent's spokeswoman said it "provides another career option for lawyers to the benefit of our clients".
Whilst Pinsents retention rate is lousy, at least the firm hasn't tried to cover them up, unlike Simmons & Simmons which is still serving time on the naughty step after RollOnFriday caught it tweaking its figures.
