remember the grunge scene? Shabby flannel shirts and ripped jeans? I was ahead of the trend and for a very brief time in my life I was on trend.. My jeans had holes in them because they were worn out, not because I'd paid extortionate money to buy them in some trendy shop.

Exactly. If they're going to steal some culture, why not steal some actual culture rather than the insipid triflings of the English countryside class.
