first home purchase

incredibly excited but also shitting myself. What do you suggest are the first things/people my boyfriend and I contact - utilities, water etc as havent got a clue about this stuff

What stage are you currently?

In this day abs age you want some plan for working WiFi as soon as you are in.  I used an EE wireless dongle while I waited for BT or Sky to get stuff up and running.  Couple of years ago I did three house moves in six months and that was a saviour.

thanks sails, no need for wifi yet as wont be actually moving in for a while. We were debating whether we needed gas/electric for time being but think we do as the worksmen will need it etc

Utilities

council tax + find bin/recycling dates

electoral roll

GP

internet/satellite tv

curtains (if not included)

find water stopcock/fusebox/gas stopcock

Insurance (need house insurance before you exchange unless it’s a flat and covered centrally)

Car stuff if applicable (licence & dvla)

schools if applicable

Change of address for everything (banks, employer, mailing lists, memberships, etc). Might be worth an auto forwarding for Royal Mail.

thanks so much MM

is it worth negotiating with utility companies to go on their cheapest rate or will they just chuck you on their standard rate so we'll need to look at price comparison sites?

Also, congratulations!

We’ve only ever done price comparisons for utilities but TV/internet people have offered me a small reduction when I sounded like I wasn’t sure/wanted to think about it.

Organise in advance for tv and broadband so it can start as soon as you move in.

If you’re buying furniture then check if there’s a lead time. Some places have a sale on currently and it can take a few weeks to be ready, so you might want to plan in advance.

Royal Mail redirections also best set up in advance (it takes a couple of days for them to get stuff together from the start date so I’d start one or two days early).
