Go Emma, win the damn US Open

Come on now.

Didn’t risky say we would never hear of her again?

There was all sorts of bullshit spouted about her on here tbf.

I wish her all the best.

I don't really enjoy Women's Tennis (I basically only watch when Federer is playing) but this got me watching.

She had a good run, but Pliskova will take her out. Pliskova has a power game that's too much for a newcomer whose game is built around finesse rather than power.

pliskova struggles against defensive players and i thought raducanu enjoys playing pace?

can’t say i have watched her closely enough to be sure tho, but in her form and momentum i would not confidently oredict

and pliskova’s got to get passed the wonderful(ly terrifying) sakkari first

Pliskova looks like one of the Na'vi from Avatar.

That probably doesn't have any effect on her tennis, mind.

Cool prediction, bro. 4-6 4-6.

I would put a reasonably large sum of money on her beating Sakkari to get to the final.

I wouldn't as it's too much 50/50 but sakkari in a slam semi is a great draw.

Agree on the draw. No Osaka, Barty or Halep so there were going to be some unexpected faces in the latter stages.

I’m much less confident of her getting past Sabalenka tho.

Let's not forget it's a great draw for sakkari too provided she doesn't choke on the opportunity. A rookie who has never even faced a top ten player.

Sabalenka? Are you ignoring how well Fernandez has played? Would be an interesting final between the two teenagers. The first of many perhaps?

I think it is Sabalenka’s title to lose from here on in.

It will be interesting to see if she copes with that. She’s not used to being the status quo at the business end of a slam.

deffo sabalenka’s to lose, but even she is not exactly massively experienced in latter stage slams

two teens in the final would be cool - fernandez has gone under the radar for me due to radacanu

You can get 5/1 on betfair (Sakkari is second favourite there).

It's amazing to watch these top players go to pieces when they start to get behind to an 18 year old.  It's all ego.  Not to take away from how well Raducanu and Ferndandez have been playing though, and their mental toughness.

I'm sure if not this US open there will be a few Fernandez/Raducanu grand slam finals in the future

I think Raducanu's mental strength to come back again and again from 0-30 is telling, you dont see that with many players.    Watching her is not like watching so many mentally fragile british players in the past.   If she holds her nerve I reckon she has a chance as she makes very very few unforced errors and is capable of changing the course of a point with a killer winner.

I think the mental toughness thing is being a little overegged at this stage possibly. When you are playing well with a big lead and your opponent is falling apart, 0-30 isn't really a big pressure point. She has been a little choky closing out matches she has otherwise dominated so she's only human. She's clearly a great front-runner which is essential but that's quite different to a ruck when you aren't controlling the whole game.

No she hasn’t she has been choky at the start of matches while her nerves settle she has closed out matches fine

No she starts fine, then gets choky in the middle and ends the match fine too.

FAOD I don't watch any womens sports.

The two matches I saw the end of she definitely dropped her level in closing out and started spraying. Don't get me wrong, closing a match is hard especially on your serve. Logically it shouldn't be but it just is.

Funnily enough it’s the other teenager, Fernandez, that is getting most of the plaudits in the US, and with good reason: beating Osaka, Kerber and Svitolina in the last three rounds is mightily impressive. They seem to think Raducanu is just a qualifier on a bit of a run whereas Fernandez is up there with Gauff as the future of tennis. In any event, those are three exciting young players.

The impression I get is that Fernandez is simply further down the road.    She has been playing tournaments the last 18m and training full time while Raducana has been doing her A levels she literally only started tennis full time this summer.   I would say therefore that Fernandez is likely ahead of Raducana at this moment but hard to say she has a brighter future necessarily.   We will need to look a Raducana in a years time to draw a real comparison, even though they are the same age.

All washed up - you're completely wrong on the mental strength point.

You clearly haven't watched enough games of hers (and are a glutton for punishment). Keep calling it wrong though.

She does get a bit nervous in the last game sometimes, that's true but against Bencic from 0-30 down she was golden.

In general she has an ability to play better on the big points that is amazing to watch.

I'm not calling anything m8, just saying people are spaffing a bit too much. She's clearly a good match player but some of the claims being made and not just on here are silly when she hasn't even played a top player yet .

Kerching kerching.

"She's clearly a good match player but some of the claims being made and not just on here are silly when she hasn't even played a top player yet."

This.

Fair enough but can we just enjoy her success now? Bloody lawyers and there “well, actually” statements…🙃

The thing is Layla Fernandez is currently ranked 73… so the exam question for our Em isn’t whether or not she can beat any of the top players. It’s whether or not she can beat Layla Fernandez.

All washed up has been hovering around since July playing the wise old man who knows better about tennis card, and is starting to look increasingly silly but is just not prepared to break character.

It's a performance worthy of Emma herself.

Oooh. Then you need to say “this aged well” or something. Or use italics!

😉 (morning!)

Morning.

I am ridiculously excited about Raducanu. Can't believe what I'm watching.

It is so cool. I’m v pleased for her. But also nervous as this is stratospheric stuff and that’s a lot for an 18 year old. I hope her team looks after her.

Can't be doing with 100+ post threads unless it's a cripple fight. So I'm decamping here.

WHY WAS THIS ON AT STUPID O'CLOCK?

Because it’s the US and there’s a time difference.

The final is at 9pm BST tomorrow appaz.

It was midnight US New York time when her really, really short match ended.

WHY WAS THIS ON AT STUPID O’CLOCK?

US mid-week sports are always on in the evenings cos the yanks do not get enough holiday for anyone to take the day off to go watch otherwise. I think the final - on Saturday - is on at a decent hour.

Yeah, but this seemed to start around 23.00 local time?  I can understand a 8pm start.

The last slam final between teenagers was Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. If these two have half the career those had it will be special.

The WTA has been soft as shit since Serena got preggers so the old guard deserve all they get.

It doesn't look like either of them will be overawed by it so should be a good final.

I think Fernandez will win it simply because it will be close and Fernandez has all the experience of close matches.    Emma has not really had tight games only games where things have basically all gone her way.  That said she could just smash it in straight sets again, happy to be proved wrong.

Guy, do you think Fernandez will win it simply because it will be close and Fernandez has all the experience of close matches.    Emma has not really had tight games only games where things have basically all gone her way.  That said she could just smash it in straight sets again, happy to be proved wrong?

surprised cryppers can stomach her success enough 2 post on this thread tbh

I think she's proved to everyone that she's capable of taking out top players - no reason to think anything differently about her ability to take out Fernandez. Will be interesting though - a final between two teenagers - the exuberance of youth etc etc. Whatever happens, I hope her team can protect her from the humongous pressure she'll now be under, and from the hangers-on.

She is very marketable I agree, which can backfire when it comes to focusing on achieving things on a tennis court, cf Ms Kournikova

Kournikova was never particularly amazing though and didn't love tennis.  IMO she got the balance just right.  Pulled in massive crowds and by far the biggest sponsorships playing a fun sport but enjoyed life too.

I think she is marketable in a different way though - she is more lovely athletic girl next door, Kournikova was more sex kitten.

I disagree with Guy and think that Fernandez will not win it simply because it will not be close and Fernandez has all the experience of close matches.    Emma has not really had tight games only games where things have basically all gone her way.  That said Emma will just smash it in straight sets again, unhappy to be proved wrong.

Wow. Whatever happens in the final, she's the real deal.

We won't know till the end of next year at the earliest.

My money's on Raducanu. Fernández has been playing really well and is the giant killer in this tournament but her last few matches have all gone to three sets including tie breakers and sets going to 7-5. She's had a much more difficult run up and I reckon she'll be exhausted by tomorrow, whereas Emma hasn't been as physically or mentally tested so will still be fresh. Hope it's close though.

This is on Prime to watch again, excellent

Shame the commentators are completely mental.

Have to say I really hope it is not close at all and Emma wins in straight sets! UK could do with a big feel good moment right about now tbh.

Heh. Amazon prime cost £8 for one month's access.

Fernandez could be overcooked but Raducanu could be undercooked, who knows? It's completely uncallable.

I've just watched the entire semi on replay (and have seen all the other rounds except the qualis).  With each match she seems to up her game and this seems to be the case within matches too.  Whenever her opponent improves (or equivalently she declines for a bit) she just moves into another gear and psychologically crushes them.  Reminds me of Federer in this sense.

Difficult to reconcile with her breathing problems at Wimbledon and her loss to Zhang.

Raducanu could be undercooked??? Wtf.

It's hard to call but based on Raducanu's run you'd be a fool to bet against her.

That "no pressure on me" response to her last post match interview felt pretty spontaneous.

Barry and Hanners like brothers from another mother.
