RoF Zoom Book Club

Anyone interested in doing something like this?

yes

no remarks about me being Laz pls

depends on the book and whether we will talk about everything other than the book.

I'd be interested but not sure if I ROF enough to merit entry - more (very) longtime lurker than poster but I do sometimes post esp on book threads. Exited the last book club (mainly mums at same school as my kid) as found the books being chosen samey and of fairly questionable quality but don't think that would be a risk with ROF folks somehow.

Lorem - if rof chats on this are any guide, we are always looking for diverse alternatives. Not as diverse as playboy or Mills & Boon but never say never.

Definitely Mistee.

Good to know there’s some interest. I think every two months?! Gives people time to get the book and read it…

Ok. Will think of some books to suggest. Majority vote. Then will set a date for it. Will request nonnymails to send out Zoom links.

Will you all wear bookish disguises in the Zoom meeting to keep the nonny theme? Perhaps dress as the characters from the book.

Ooh that’s a fun idea.

RoF rules apply. No outing. Ideally you should be willing to be on screen, otherwise you’re just a disembodied voice... You can change your Zoom name to your RoF one, of course…

This sounds like a good idea. Could we cover Bravo Two Zero first? Or is it "worthy" books only?

I will not dress up. You're just gonna have to suffer my middle-aged and oversized appearance. Soz.

Dusty: I haz a new phone so have lost all whatsapp contacts but do you have my nonnymail?

I don’t know re nonny. Have you changed numbers? I can drop you a Whatsapp, if not?

This should be fun.  I've wondered what you all look like ha ha!!  I will have to create a nonny email.  So what are the no outing rules if we see someone we know on screen?

I’ll wear a beard, fake moustache and stupid thick framed glasses. But that’s what I do anyway.

Mistee, have we not “met” on social media? Or am i getting you mixed up?

I already know who Laz is. Old news! 😂

1. Ok, please suggest one (ONE!!) fiction book to be shortlisted.

2. It must be published post 2010 and still be in print or able to be downloaded onto a Kindle/similar.

3. Fiction only, no autobiographical books. Pretty much any genre of fiction allowed but not erotic. Sorry kids, this is fwap free zone. Do that on your own time.

4. Shortlist nominations close on 24 September at 17:00 GMT and I will announce the shortlist the following week. Please include your nonnymail in your book nomination post so i can send you the Zoom link later. If you want to join in but don’t have any books to suggest, then please email me at [email protected] so i have your nonny.

I will break suggestions down into a shortlist. If we get too many suggestions in one genre for example, i will draw one out of a hat to be shortlisted.

Mwah x

sorry forgot my nonnymail but it is above on thread

do we all have to read handmaid's tale and then be sullen about our angry vajs?

I refuse to participate in this.

I might reconsider if is on Teams.

Stop being a twat, Sumo. That joke is so five years ago 🙄

Jethro, whatevs.

To our enormous good fortune The Handmaid’s Tale was published in 1986, and so unfortunately not eligible.

Quel dommage

I haven’t read any Richard Powers yet and I understand he has something out later this month called Bewilderment so one vote for that.

The Appeal by Janice Hallett

Hi Dusty, I don't think we have met on "social media" as I am not on anything other than WhatsApp (does that count)?  I do have a FB account but never use it.  Have you always been Stardust?  Anyway we shall soon find out ha ha!

I'd love to but basically I'd be Rachel from Friends when it comes to my effort in reading the book...

Lol - no - I wouldn't read it and then would steal someone else's ideas.

dusty - i have no access to my nonny as its been awhile since i accessed it. Will send you an email from my regular one.

Re the book - will go with the chosen one here.

May have to do, sometimes, what glasserz has in mind - blag your way through or listen in.

Good thing I know who you are, eh?

fontaine! Are you going to nominate a book?

Heh @ Judith Butler gag

Cloud Atlas qualifies as does Utopia Avenue (haven’t read the latter yet).

Ok. Jack, are you going to nominate Utopia Avenue? 🙃

Utopia Avenue is a very dull novel and a misstep from the generally excellent DM.

A gentleman in Moscow (only because it’s on my list and may make me read it quicker)? Or is that too mainstream/ low brow/ already read?

Don’t overthink this! If it’s fiction and you want to read it, nominate it.

I'm not reading fvcking cloud atlas for a book group

can we have something short that I've already read pls

Am happy to have group convince me I should like Sense of an Ending. I tried to

It’s ok, Hoolz. Cloud Atlas is too early. Books will be voted on.

Doggers, are you still using the rofgivegenerously email?

I won’t out you if you don’t have a nonny! I full intend to BCC this shizzle 😉

Sorry - misread the 2010 as 2000 - getting old.

The film was post-2010 fwiw, fairly sure I read it on a summer holiday some time in the mid- to late noughties.

Or English Monsters (James Scudamore) - have heard good things and it’s a topic that should fascinate/pander to ROF prejudices nicely

Jack is that your nomination, then? Can i please have your nonny mail, if so? If you don’t have one, just email mine directly, so i can send the Zoom link when we get to that point.

I’m game to read either English Monsters or Sally Rooney.

Slight preference for the former.

I’ll email your nonnymail.

Forgotten the password to my nonnymail. Is non-nonnymail acceptable?

Yup. I shan’t out you, obviously, and will BCC the Zoom link.

Bumpety bump.

UPDATE: We have six nominations so far. Nominations close a week on Friday.

Criteria as follows (saves you scrolling through!)

1. Please suggest one (ONE!!) fiction book to be shortlisted.

Mwah x

Geoff has updated his nomination to me dreckly, as such it’s now on the list.

Anyone else?

I read Death in Venice 25 years ago.

Old man perving over teenage boy in decadent Venice, rife with images of corruption and decay.

There, saved everyone the bother. fooking deviant, Thomas Mann.

If 'Ready Player One' can be on the list then I'll do this

And his brother wrote even longer, even more boring novels. He can do one as well.

Jack, he suggested a different book. It’s ok. Chill.

Mugen, it can! 2011 publishing date. What’s your nonny?

Sorry. Literature degree PTSD or one thing.

Will take some dried frog pills and be right as rain.

Fair enough. I still fcking hate Villette and Return of the Native, for similar reasons.

fever dream is the book i’ve read recently that has stayed with me the most but i would never ever ever want to read it again ever

i’m currently reading interior chinatown and it’s hilarious so will nominate that

Dusty, I've read the first five chapters of Eight Detectives by Alex Pavesi, and have to withdraw my nomination.

The formulaic character development mimics Agatha Christie in its simplicity, and the 'detective' logic would entertain nerdy teenagers.

But a book club surely needs to discuss a work that shines a perspective on the complexity, angst and delight of the human condition.

Oh wait! This is ROF

Ok, will delete it. Let me know if you have an alternative choice!

Only five days until the nominations close!

102 hours and 50 mins (approximately!)

You’ll have about six weeks to read the book, so don’t feel like you’re up against it if you agree to sign up. Going to suggest week ending 19 November for the first one. Do people want Thursdays? Think that might be a good weekday evening…

Ps Merkz is that an actual nomination? If so, nonnymail please.

Nominations close tomorrow at 17:00. Nominate, don’t hate…or other bumper stickers.

We currently have ten books on the list.

Can I save my nomination until I am back in the country? I will nonny you then if you are still going

Dusty, you have my nonny.  My suggestions are The Appeal or People of Abandoned Character as per my review thread.
